A strong advocate for accessible music education programme in the community, Ernest has led significant collaborative educational and community initiatives with local partners such as the Ministry of Education (MOE) schools and the People’s Association. He is a founding member and current committee member of the biennial Nanyang International Music Competition and the annual Nanyang International Piano Academy which aims to create a community of musicians of all ages.
During his time at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Ernest has led several key initiatives including a new specialist diploma in orchestral conducting, curriculum review of the Music diploma programme, and a new music degree programme. To foster active exchanges between NAFA’s School of Music and leading overseas institutions, Ernest developed programmes such as the Overseas Immersion, collaborative performance projects, and online lecture and masterclass series with overseas institutions, including the Royal College of Music (London), Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing), Tainan National University of the Arts, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
His research interests lie in the areas of intercultural studies, pedagogy skills, and curriculum design in music education. He had presented at the World Conference of the International Society of Music Education (ISME), Asia-Pacific Symposium on Music Education Research (APSMER), Ho Chi Minh City International Piano Festival, and Redesigning Pedagogy International Conference (NIE) in Singapore. Besides adjudicating in competitions such as the Young Pianist Competition (Singapore), and Vivace Inter-Junior College Piano Duo Competition (Singapore), Ernest is active as a clinician and external examiner in music schools in the Southeast Asian region.
Ernest Lim received his undergraduate and post-graduate degrees from the University of Central Arkansas, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and University of South Carolina where he studied with Neil Rutman, Richard Veleta, Charles Fugo, and Scott Price.
Ernest joined NAFA in 2006 and has served as Dean of the School of Music since December 2019.
